Summary
Review introduces newer findings on the mode of action
of proteases mostly used in clinical treatment. Systemic
anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling, and anti-allergic effects
(including the brain) can be supposed only if relevant
proteases cross enteric and blood-brain barriers after
oral administration, reach the system in detectable amount,
and do not loose their enzymatic activity. Authors summarize
findings supporting such a possibility, and point to limitations
and further perspectives of the clinical use of proteolytic
enzymes.
